About
Us Marina's on the Square at 125
North Maple is steeped in Murfreesboro history. Ingram Collier and
Louisiana Jones (Jones was her name from a previous marriage) erected
this building in 1869. Louisiana, being such an independant woman
for her time, decided to have her name listed first on the cornerstone
of this building still located out front. Ingram, a wealthy cotton
broker, met Louisiana on a trip to Kentucky. After losing her husband
and both of her sons during the Civil War, she decided to remarry
and move to Ingram's hometown of Murfreesboro. The couple built
their impressive victorian mansion at 511 E. Main Street, which
is presently owned by Jim and Judith Smythe. Ingram and Lousiana
originally built this building to house cotton but it only served
this purpose for a few short years until, at the age of thirty-five,
Ingram died of leukemia.
The building is currently owned by Mrs. Sarah King who was instrumental
in saving our antebellum courthouse, and the Oakland's Mansion in
the 1950's. This building became a restaurant around the turn of
the century, and housed several more since that time.Because College
street (then Hwy 41) was the only road leading from Nashville to
Chicago it was an ideal location for a restaurant. The only road
leading to Florida from this area was Main Street.
The first known restaurant in this location, was "The Busy
Bee Cafe" in 1928. Other restaurants followed such as; "Jimmie's
Place" in 1935, and "Eddie's" soon after. The restaurant
"Sullivan's" was established in the early fifties, and
soon became the most popular restaurant in Murfreesboro. Mrs. Sullivan
once commented that everything that they made was from scratch,
right down to their mayonnaise. Food suppliers were scarce and were
only used for sides of beef, or fifty pound bags of flour. Over
the years the building was home to "Cooks," “Don's
Kitchen Corner", "David Clark's", and most recently,
the"Town Square Cafe".
In 1992, John and Cindy Polverino opened a little Italian restaurant
they called "Marina's", named after their eldest daughter.
The Duross family bought Marina's in 1998 and have continued its
operations since. We hope that you love this special place as much
as we do.
Thanks, Doug and Suzanne |
